Telecom Power Monitoring Unit

The telecom Power Monitoring Unit (PMU) is the critical part in modern day telecom infrastructure. Conventionally, telecom shelters employ multiple components for their operation starting from Servo stabilizers, Environmental monitoring systems, DG controllers, Real time based controls etc. This resulted in herculean task in managing the infrastructure with multiple vendors & no single platform to monitor the shelter from remote.

This has led to the solution –PMU. The basic block diagram of the unit would be as below.

The block diagram shows the architecture of PMU.  The PMU houses the complete active infrastructure required for the telecom shelters right from the Voltage stabilizer, Isolation transformer, AMF panel for DG control, environment & fire alarm system, surge protectors, data logger, load distribution panel & a GSM/GPRS based monitoring system.

The input is connected through a Static voltage regulator which is solid state & has very fast response to the input variations. The static voltage regulator is highly reliable & maintenance free compared to the conventional stabilizers. This combined with isolation transformer provides the telecom site the perfect isolation & protection from the line variations & common mode noises. The SPD (Surge Protection Device) protects the site from all the surges including the lightening.

The AMF panel takes care of the operation of the DG with optimized fuel management system built into the controller. This controller provides the complete protection for the DG in Auto & Manual modes of operation for DG faults like LLOP, Overheat, low fuel & overload. The operation of this automatic & no manual supervision required saving huge operating costs. The DG controls are governed by site temperature & battery status so that the DG is run only when necessary during power failures by saving fuel costs.

The Load distribution system takes care of the whole electrical wiring needs of the site & all the controls are provided in a single unit including lighting, AC control, DG controls & other outlets.

The other part of the PMU is the environmental monitoring systems. This includes monitoring of shelter temperature, smoke/fire alarm & intrusion protection with actuators at the shelter door. These inputs are fed to the controller for further processing.

The heart of the above system is the PMS controller which monitors & controls the entire operation of the unit. This microprocessor based unit takes all operational values of the shelters including the voltage, current, energy, run time, status, alarms of various modules. These data are used to control various modules as per the preset & programmable parameters. This unit has built in re-writable memory for the storage of all alarms & values with a time stamp to create a history of the site for analysis & troubleshooting. This unit is equipped with GSM/GPRS communication module which transmits all the data to a central monitoring station which receives the input from all sites. From the data received at the central site, we can monitor all the operating status of the sites with minimum manpower requirement & actual site status available at any moment. This data can be further used to alert maintenance personnel with SMS, e-mail etc so that the sites are up & running efficiently.
